Flexa Migraine and Headache Clinic
Our Musculoskeletal Migraine and Headache Clinic is a first of its kind in New Zealand. Headed by Dr Craig Panther and Medical Director & physiotherapist Murray Hing, our clinic offers preventative treatment for chronic tension headaches, chronic neck and back pain and migraine headaches.
At Flexa clinic we are using a combination of two modalities to treat migraine and chronic daily headache:
-
Botox® , better known for its cosmetic use, has been used therapeutically to treat migraine since 1992. There is evidence of a direct effect on neurotransmitters within the central nervous system, with a resulting reduction in migraine frequency in many cases. Botox is injected into certain neck muscles in order to help correct any specific tightness
-
Physiotherapy, involving an initial muscle balance assessment followed by a 12-week programme to stretch and strengthen the neck muscles as required.
While a first of its type in New Zealand, this treatment has been in use internationally for the last decade. However, this clinic is the first to combine Botox® with physiotherapy and a musculoskeletal postural programme. As with cosmetic Botox®, the direct effect on the neurotransmitters dimishes over a period of a few months. But it is this window of opportunity that allows migraine-causing triggers, such as poor posture and severe muscle tension, to be corrected and reduce migraine frequency and intensity.

One chronic migraine sufferer was using up to six migraine injections per week. Following our treatment, his usage dropped to two or three per month. Another patient, suffered from debilitating lower back pain, was unable to play sport and was in constant pain at work. He is now able to play tennis and to mountain bike ride.
An initial 60-90 minute consultation and assessment with Murray Hing determines whether the treatment is suitable. This consultation includes a full muscle balance assessment and medical history and will cost $350.00. If this concludes that you are likely to gain benefits, your personalised programme is then put together, based on the comprehensive musculoskeletal and postural muscle balance report. This determines the physical therapy treatment needed. This is complemented in some cases by a Botox® injection programme. During the course of the treatment, patients are regularly assessed for their progress.
If you have ever suffered the sometimes-debilitating effects of migraine, headache or back pain, help is at hand.
