Shock Wave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) has been used in medicine for over 35 years. It was first used for the eradication of kidney stones in the 70’s and in the late 90’s its use expanded in musculoskeletal medicine, where it’s used for Achilles tendon, plantar fascia, knee, elbow, and shoulder injuries as well as non-union fractures and throchanteric bursitis.

It’s a safe, drug free, non-invasive method to treat unresponsive injuries. Kompass Ortho-Shock are the pioneers of ESWT in the region and have been providing this service for over 9 years with a good measure of success. Our patient include elite athletes and personnel of the SAS, the weekend warrior and older adults. ESWT offers you a rapid pathway to recovery without dependence on pain medication and continuous therapy.

ESWT  acts by increasing cellular permeability triggering biological and molecular liberation of factors such as; vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), endothelial nitric oxide syntheses (eNOS), and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Shockwaves have shown to increase local blood circulation and metabolism. Synergistically, these factors along with fibroblast recruitment and modulation, stimulate the regeneration processes from the healthy tissue surrounding the focus of the affliction; resulting in injury resolution.

ESWT does not mask pain symptoms therefore when you undertake activity after treatment you are not at risk of causing further tissue damage due to pain blockade from drugs or chemical agents. ESWT works best when treatment is provided by an experienced provider using the correct technology. We use an electro-hydraulic device that is capable of multiple focussed energy levels. Evidence studies conducted by both the ACC and international investigators found that electro-hydraulic shockwave technology provide the best treatment outcomes. This is why the ACC only funds ESWT provided by Kompass Ortho-Shock.

Our principle ESWT provider is Ken Craig who in 2001 together with an orthopaedic surgeon commenced investigations and study on ESWT. Ken is consulted internationally with regard to ESWT use and developments and is a member of the International Society of Musculoskeletal Shockwave Treatment (ISMST). Ken has been involved in the health sector since 1989 internationally with multinational medical and pharmaceutical corporations and hospital project management. He has a background in pharmacology and podiatric sciences and is currently involved in postgraduate studies and work in musculoskeletal pain medicine with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Otago.
